For best resuklts, leave your bluetooth device's volume at maximum for maximum output from the B1, and vary playback level with your Hi-Fi's volume control.

It sounds great, with a completely silent background, full 2 V output, smooth detailed sound and full infrasonic bass respoonse. PRAGMATIC: 1) amplification, 2) lossless, 3) DAC. At any price, the audioengine B1 is a great DAC. At 192kbps, no question, sound is inferior to lossless under good listening conditions. At 256kbps I can convince myself there are differences sometimes. But, I don't see much point to 320 as the files sizes are not really that much smaller than lossless (2-3 fold?).

I have an AudioEngine D1 DAC for my Grado SR225i. Audioengine D1 24-Bit DAC, Premium Desktop Digital to Analogue Converter & Headphone Amplifier 722 169. Long version: So, there comes the time in every persons life where hes bitten by the travel bug. At 320kbps, I confess to not hearing a difference as compared to lossless. It hasnt made it around to local meets Ive been to. I attribute it 90% to the better amplification.Ĥ) Resolution thresholds are much debated, but if most of your music is in 256kbs rips I'd say you may be hurting yourself already (aside from the amplification issue above). A DAC/AMP made a huge difference for my computer-based listening.

I can't make any first hand comments regarding tube DACs, but my $0.02 on the rest.ġ) External DAC will bypass any need for upstream processing (soundcard), as mentioned aboveĢ) Very few (any?) options for external DAC that handle SACD exist since nothing that plays a SACD disk is made to output the digital stream.ģ) I'm willing to bet that your PC "sounds like crap" primarily due to lack of enough amplification to drive the headphones (but, sure, the processing may also contribute).
